What Are Hemorrhoids or Piles?

Hemorrhoids or Piles as they are often called in the UK, are swellings on the inside of the anal canal, the short, muscular tube that connects the rectum with the anus. They are round swellings that can reach the size of a grape. They are not varicose veins.

The main symptoms of hemorrhoids are:
- itching and irritation of the anus and surrounding area
- aching pain and discomfort after going to the toilet
- bleeding from the anus
- a lump on the anus, which may be tender
- soiling of underwear with slime or faeces (‘skid marks’).
